October, 1999
Dear Clients and Friends,
Greetings to all of you from China. I've been here now since the middle of September and as usual, the situation is constantly changing. Just an update for you on my recent activities. Upon my arrival, I was informed that the new clinic that I had designed for the Beijing Main Veterinary Hospital was now open for business. Located closer to the downtown and with more space, my colleagues were anxious to see me more comfortably situated. Most of this past month of October has been spent getting the word out and introducing my old clients to the new location.
In addition, there have been visitors from abroad. An Italian veterinary colleague of mine was in town representing her government to sign some agreements for aid to the more impoverished areas of China. We travelled together to Qinghai near the Tibetan border to visit a College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine where work is planning to be done on the yak and Tibetan sheep and their parasite infestation control.
Of course there was also time to visit the largest inland salt lake in China, Qinghai Lake up in the mountains (over 10,000 ft. elevation). Many of the local people are Tibetan and there is also a very interesting monatary (Taer Monastary) which is the founding center of the Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
Back in Beijing, other activities have included helping the China Agricultural University's College of Veterinary Medicine bring in a foreign expert to lecture to the veterinary staff and students. More and more of the staff have now begun to go abroad for trips to broaden their viewpoints of how veterinary medicine is practiced in the West.
So time passes quickly and I look forward to my return soon to California and all of you there.
Wishing you and all of your families a Happy Thanksgiving, I remain,
Most sincerely yours,
Ann-si
