Freckles is a Basset Hound whose story begins in May of 1998 when, at approximately 10 years of age, she experienced an attack of acute pain. Her people brought her immediately to her regular veterinarian, as she couldn't walk. Freckles was sent to a specialist for evaluation and through x-rays and myelograms, it was found that she had ruptured two disks. She then was operated on.

Freckles had had a history of calcified disks, but the surgeon found that the ruptures were at a new location. Her operation was pretty much what Joe Montana of the San Francisco Forty-niners had for his bad back.

Following her surgery, she was in quite a bit of pain, but through a pain patch, this was relieved somewhat. She was still not completely able to get up and walk, and by the end of the summer, Freckles' veterinarian recommended that her person consider acupuncture to help in the healing process of the spine.

I first saw Freckles in September, and she had a series of four treatments over the month of September. Freckles on the first visit had a canine cart that she was using to go on walks. She is a very happy, active personality and had adapted very well to her cart, which had enabled her to be ambulatory despite her inability to use her back legs completely.

Over the course of the treatments, Freckles now can stand up on her own, and get up by herself. She slowly needed her cart less and less. As I write this now it's nearly been one year since Freckles received her acupuncture. Her person has thrown out the canine cart, and Freckles can now run and play just like her housemates.

Thanks to Dr. Lauren Knobel and The Lake Veterinary Hospital for this referral.
